چکیده

From a rediscussion of Local Group membership, and of distances to individual galaxies, we obtain MV values for 35 probable and possible Local Group members. The luminosity function of these objects is well fitted by a Schechter function with faint end slope α = −1.1 ± 0.1. The probability that the luminosity distribution of the Local Group is a single Schechter function with α steeper than −1.3 is less than 1 per cent. However, more complicated luminosity functions, such as multi-component Schechter functions with steep faint-end slopes, cannot be ruled out. There is some evidence that the luminosity distribution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group is steeper than that of dwarf irregular galaxies. The Parameter Space Occupied by Galaxies : The optical window

We discuss the optical parameter space (luminosity and surface brightness) over which galaxies are known to exist and report on the results from three recent datasets: the Two-degree Field Galaxy Red-shift Survey, the Hubble Deep Field north, and the Local Group. These data are combined to provide a unique and comprehensive insight into the luminosity distribution of galaxies over the range −24...

The local FIR Galaxy Colour-Luminosity distribution: A reference for BLAST, and Herschel/SPIRE sub-mm surveys

We measure the local galaxy far-infrared (FIR) 60-to-100μm colour-luminosity distribution using an all-sky IRAS survey. This distribution is an important reference for the next generation of FIR–submillimetre surveys that have and will conduct deep extra-galactic surveys at 250–500μm. With the peak in dust-obscured star-forming activity leading to present-day giant ellipticals now believed to o...

Modeling the Evolution of Infrared Luminous Galaxies: the Influence of the Luminosity-temperature Distribution

The evolution of the luminous infrared galaxy population is explored using a pure luminosity evolution model which incorporates the locally observed luminosity-temperature distribution for IRAS galaxies. Pure luminosity evolution models in a fixed ΛCDM cosmology are fitted to submillimeter (submm) and infrared counts, and backgrounds. It is found that the differences between the locally determi...

The Elliptical Galaxy formerly known as the Local Group: Merging the Globular Cluster Systems

Prompted by a new catalogue of M31 globular clusters, we have collected together individual metallicity values for globular clusters in the Local Group. Although we briefly describe the globular cluster systems of the individual Local Group galaxies, the main thrust of our paper is to examine the collective properties. In this way we are simulating the dissipationless merger of the Local Group,...

The Bi-variate Luminosity-color Distribution of Iras Galaxies, and Implications for the High Redshift Universe

We present a characterization of the local luminosity-color, bi-variate distribution of IRAS galaxies from the 1.2 Jy sample, selected at 60μm. The R(60,100) infrared color is used as the best single parameter description of the IR spectral energy distribution of galaxies. We derive an analytical form of the distribution and use it to constrain the effect of the IR color distribution on evoluti...
